Upcoming Events for the Week 1/18-1/24

Posted by Austin Cinephile

Wednesday, 1/20
11:59pm, Alamo Drafthouse Ritz, Weird Wednesday: LORD LOVE A DUCK
Weird Wednesday is probably the greatest idea in Austin cinema. Lord Love a Duck looks to be an inept beach movie a la Beach Blanket Bingo. To me, the appeal of those teen movies, aside from laughing with Don Rickles laughing at Frankie Avalon, is the garish colors. The gimmick in this week’s Weird Wednesday is that it’s in black and white. I can’t wait to see those artfully grayscaled bikini bottoms!

Thursday, 1/21-Thursday, 1/28
11:59pm, Alamo Drafthouse Lamar, A TOWN CALLED PANIC
This animated gem was one of my absolute favorite films of the year. It is brilliant, hilarious, absurd, and imaginative. It is opening at midnight on Thursday at Lamar, and it may have only a 1 week run if the foolish population of this city doesn’t get wise to Belgian animation. If so, you must rush out to see it this week.

Friday, 1/22 or Saturday, 1/23
9:30pm or 7:00pm, Paramount, MARS ATTACKS!
Yes, Tim Burton’s second greatest sci-fi film will be playing at the Paramount this weekend in the evening times. This time, I am told, the screening will be in glorious 35mm, so don’t worry film fans. This film deserves every bit of its titular exclamation point, as it features an all-star cast with great effects and wonderfully hot alien babes. It should be a lot of fun.
